As a bit of a leg stretching exercise, as well as because it is about time we do this, let's take a nice, wide, sidestep to our "TOPIC" list. Just to refresh your memory, here it is:
TOPICS
1. Inability to access birth information;
2. Wanting/desire to know one’s life story/ Curiosity about one’s roots/ Wanting to know who and why one exists on the planet;
3. Medical history;
4. Not knowing/growing with biologically connected siblings.
While these topics were not specifically the subject of the various research I read, from personal experience I can say absolutely yes, these are definitely topics that adoptees think about, wonder about and sometimes, even worry about… and they are unique to adoptees. Thoughts on these topics and others all dance through my head every now and again. There have been times in my life that I thought about these things a lot, actually.
Since I have been trying not to be too anecdotal and/or prove my point but rather to get the point in this process, I decided to take up the research baton once again in this great blog relay.
Now, some of you may be thinking, "Geez, Jupe really needs a hobby, doesn’t she?" Fact is (since I am so very full of fact these days) I’ve got more hobbies than just about anything else. Another fact is I think I am a natural snoop. There is something about zooming around the internet and accessing all this info without anyone else knowing (ok, ‘Big Brother’ could know, but I’m really not that interesting in the worldwide scheme of things) makes me feel as quite the female Sam Spade/Phillip Marlowe… without the sneer. I wish I had the sneer …
Onward I plunged into research once again, except this time the scholarly-type of information wasn’t to be the focus. Adoptees, their perspectives on their lives and the adoption related topics they think about … not to mention any resultant "problems" … were to be the focus of this latest foray into detective work.
Since the majority of adoptees I know have similar perspectives and balance with having been adopted as myself, I decided it would be important to delve deeper into the large group of adoptees all over the internet that are more than just a little unhappy that they were adopted. In the past, I had only glanced at some of these blogs. This time, I wanted to go deep …
… But I didn’t really manage to go as deep as I would have liked, as I was starting to suffocate. I made just the teeny tiniest dent in the plethora of adoptee blogs and forums available by reading around 100 different blog entries and their resultant comments on 40 different sites. Did I mention one of my hobbies is reading? I guess you have figured that out by now, eh?
WOW. I am exhausted from what I read: exhausted and very sad for a whole lot of people.
