National Adoption Day is a very important resource to shine the light on the large number of foster children waiting and hoping to be adopted. It also allows the public to see adoption maybe in a positive light allowing the image of adoption to be changed. National Adoption always falls on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Thousands (in 2006 – 3300 foster children were adopted) of foster children have their dream come true on this day. These foster children have been given a great gift of a forever family on this special day.

Judges, attorneys, adoption personnel, child welfare agencies all work towards the goal of providing as many foster children adoptive placements on this day. They donate their time and resources without making any profit to help families and foster children to become the family they have longed for. The adoptive families do not have to pay legal fees just the court cost of the paperwork stuff. It is amazing that people can come together and work for the greater good of helping a foster child become a member of a forever adoptive family.

As an adoptee I have never celebrated National Adoption Day. I do not know why. Maybe it is because today’s society is more open or views adoption differently than when I was being raised. In my home it was just how I came to be and it was not viewed as a holiday or a major ordeal, it was just part of life like so many other things.

Foster care adoption will always have a special place in my heart since I was blessed with three of my children from the foster care system. I know how many foster children wait every year hoping that they will have their turn at finding a forever adoptive family. Hopefully each year the number of foster children being adopted on National Adoption Day will continue to grow.
