There is a campaign on to do away with the adoption tax credit. I encourage every adoptive parent and other people involved with adoption to fight against this campaign. This country has worked hard getting children adopted and not spending years living in limbo. This adoption tax credit has helped many children find loving and forever families. The campaign against the adoption tax credit does allow for some foster children to benefit by allowing the adoption credit to remain for some foster children. This is a great concern to me. Who and by what standards would decide which foster children benefit from this? Is this telling some children they are worthy of being adopted while others are not? Could this be another whole set of problems for foster care to deal with?

Fight for the adoption tax credit!!! We can make a difference if we work together. Below you will find a sample letter that you can send to support the Adoption Tax Relief Guarantee Act of 2007 and the links to your local senate and representatives.

Dear Senator or Representative (name)

Regarding H.R. 471, the “Adoption Tax Relief Guarantee Act of 2007,” I am writing to respectfully request that the House Committee on Ways and Means increase the child adoption tax credit currently set to expire in 2010.

This is, and has been a great benefit in the adoption community by allowing children to find safe, loving and permanent homes. Every foster child adopted through the state should be eligible for this tax credit. It helps find permanent homes for the children that have been abused and neglected. This helps relieve the burden the states are feeling by the devastating number of children coming into foster care and helps relieve the tax burden. We remove these children from their abusive homes and they deserve every chance to be adopted.

Infant domestic and international adoptions are also providing children with secure, loving, safe and permanent families. Support children being given a chance at a life through adoption. Every child waiting to be adopted deserves a chance just as your children have grown up with.

Progress has been made with the Adoption Tax Relief that benefits children that have found adoptive homes. Go forward with the continued progress made with adoption benefits and extend it beyond 2010. Children are benefiting from this. Continue the hope for children waiting to be adopted. Fight for more children to find adoptive families.
Sincerely,

  1. I have a little political experience and would highly recommend emailing this letter to Rep. Charles Rangel who is the Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee.

You can email him quickly and easily by going to: http://www.house.gov/htbin/wrep_findrep

Then enter the state of New York and zip code 10027 to go directly to his email form.
