While I have repeatedly stated in the past that I acknowledge and understand that there are some adoptees that are completely against adoption. I am screaming now, “I totally understand that a few adoptees have major issues with adoption or being adopted.” Now, that it is said again, I will respond to a
detailed comment against adoption and adoptive parents.
There was a time when young pregnant girls were sent away to have their babies in secret to not bring shame on the families. The girl’s family, babies’ father, and society expected the baby to be placed up for adoption. In most cases that is what happened. Could the girl have kept the baby? Possibly, she was alone without family or anyone else to help. She would have found herself shunned from society with a hard, hard road to walk alone. Was this right for the birth mother or pregnant girls? Heck no! It was also a different time when things were viewed very differently without resources or options for girls faced with an unplanned pregnancy.
This part of adoption and unplanned pregnancies has evolved beyond this just as so many other things have evolved. Life is a continue learning process that will continue progressing with each generation. We learn from the past how to make things better.
I have learned from my adoptive parents how to be a better adoptive parent because of their experiences. Life experiences do not come without mistakes and blunders along the way. I know what I have learned from the past with being an adoptee that will change things for other adoptees in the future. My learning experiences as an adoptee I hope will help my own adopted children in their adoption journey. So to base adoption now on the problems in adoption in the past is injustice. Life is about learning from our mistakes and experiences for a better tomorrow. Yes, adoption in the past was very different from today. We have to continue striving for a better system but we also have to be realistic.
