Sometimes I get behind on blog reading. I use a blog reader so unless I go in and check it regularly (which sometimes I don’t) the posts can really start to pile up. I’m sure this is a familiar problem for many. Sometimes I just need a break from reading/thinking about adoption stuff. Sometimes I just get too busy. One of my problems is that I will read an interesting blog – which inevitably links to other interesting blogs and the next thing I know a few hours have gone by and I’m still reading. There is just so much good stuff out there (and a lot of not so good too but I won’t go into that).
And sometimes I just need a break from reading/thinking about adoption stuff. Writing this blog has had a variety of impacts on my life. The major impact is that I’m reading more about adoption – and I’m thinking about it more too. A lot more. There was a time in my life that I thought about it every day. I won’t say I was obsessed but I viewed of lot of my life though my “adoptee lens.” Over the years as I worked on understanding the impact adoption had on my life, I thought about it a lot less. And in fact in the past 3 or 4 years I thought of it infrequently. That is until my husband and I decided to adopt. And I decided to start writing this blog.
Sometimes I get overwhelmed at the amount of information out there (although I am happy to see so many thoughtful writers exploring a wide range of adoption issues). Some days I feel like I’m an expert on what it means to be adopted…..other days I feel like I have NO clue. Today is a “no clue” day. The more I learn the more I feel that I don’t know anything at all.
With all of this swimming in my mind I decided to try to list a few of my favorite blogs. I read many more than what is on the list below, including many non-adoption related blogs. I may need to pare down the number at some point. I didn’t include adoptionblogs.com on my list since if you are reading my post you obviously are already familiar with this site.
1. Love Isn’t Enough (LIE)
I read just about every entry here. There are numerous writers who contribute and all are very good. This blog isn’t specifically about adoption but it is a common topic. The description on the main webpage is: Love Isn’t Enough is a blog about parenting and race. That is exactly what it is. I find many of the posts on this blog help me to more deeply examine some of my long-held views. It isn’t always comfortable to read the posts but that is what makes it so good.
2. This Woman’s Work
I enjoy reading this blog quite a bit. Again, it isn’t exclusively about adoption but I find that is why I like it. It covers a wide range of parenting topics – one of them being open adoption. Reading this blog inspires me to want to be a great parent (when that time comes).
3. Harlow’s Monkey
This is my favorite adoptee blog. I like it because it doesn’t shy away from difficult issues. I know how difficult it can be to write about emotional or hard adoption issues and put it out on the web for everyone to read and critique. I sometimes worry my writing will be misinterpreted or will unnecessarily offend readers and because of these concerns there are certain topics I haven’t yet written about. The author of Harlow’s Monkey, Jae Ran Kim, is not afraid to write honest and hard truths about her adoption experiences, her observations and her beliefs. I admire and appreciate that.
